Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, over time; skin ages and loses its youthful appearance. In addition to skin cancer and sunburn, other effects can include hyperpigmentation, wrinkling, and premature aging. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutis. The dermis contains collagen, elastin, and other fibers that support the skin’s structure.  It is these elements that give skin its smooth and youthful appearance – and that are damaged by UV radiation (UVR). The UVR that affects the skin is composed of two different types of waves, UVA and UVB. UVB rays are shorter than UVA rays, and are the main culprit behind sunburn.  But it is the UVA rays, with their longer wavelength, that are responsible for the damage which we associate with photoaging. Photoaging looks very much like premature aging, changes in pigmentation , dryness, areas of redness, thinning of the dermis and loss of elasticity all occur, leading to sagging, wrinkled skin and leathery skin. Worse yet, accumulated severe ultraviolet damage to the skin is a definite causative factor for the most common forms of skin cancer. While people with fair skin who burn easily are at the highest risk, nobody is immune or even completely protected. Because the skin changes associated with photoaging are largely permanent, prevention is the best strategy to combat photoaging.

What kind of sunscreens should I use?

Daily application of broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sun protection with an SPF of at least 30 or higher will not only help to prevent photoaging, but can reverse some of the signs you might already have.

There are two basic types of topical sunscreens:
